Sex toy materials: what the labels mean

Material labels are worth reading closely. Similar-looking products can use very different compositions.

Know what the material name actually says

Products may list silicone, ABS plastic, stainless steel, glass, TPE, TPR, PVC or blended materials. These are not interchangeable terms. A marketing label such as “silky feel” or “skin-like” does not reliably identify the contact material.

Nonporous materials such as properly specified 100% silicone, appropriate metals, hard plastic and suitable glass are generally easier to clean thoroughly than porous or blended materials. This is one reason to look for a specific composition rather than a vague product description.

Porous materials need extra thought

Some softer flexible plastics and blends may be porous and harder to clean completely. The product’s construction, recommended cleaning method and intended use matter. A manufacturer’s ingredient or materials documentation is more meaningful than an unsupported “body safe” badge.

If you have sensitivities, check all contact materials, coatings and fragrance ingredients. Seek professional advice for allergy or health concerns instead of relying on retailer copy.

Design and finish deserve attention too

Look for smooth construction and an appropriate shape for the intended purpose. Inspect products before use and stop using anything with cracks, sharp seams or damage. Glass products should be manufactured for intimate use and checked for chips.

Material choice should be considered with lubricant compatibility, cleaning instructions and storage. Compare the complete product information rather than deciding from the material name alone.

Common questions

Does “silicone feel” mean 100% silicone?

No. It may describe a texture. Look for an explicit composition from the manufacturer.

Are flexible materials always nonporous?

No. Different formulations vary. Check the material disclosure and maker’s care guidance.
